Rest in Peace Bernadine

Pretoria - A Grade 11 pupil died on her way to Garsfontein High School in Pretoria on Monday morning after a taxi first incessantly hooted at her before hitting her scooter from behind and driving over her.

Bernadine Kruger, 16, died on impact.

Hugo Vermaak, who was driving along Atterbury Road, saw the accident happen between the Jacqueline and General Louis Botha Drive intersections.:

"I was driving in a westerly direction. The traffic was heavy and we were moving very slowly.

"I saw the girl on her little scooter going in an easterly direction. She was in the left-hand lane.

"Then I saw the taxi speeding up behind her and hooting at her. Just as she wanted to change lanes, he hit her full-on.

"I saw her mouth open when he hit her. She fell and then he drove over her. It wasn't a pretty sight," Vermaak said.

After the accident the traffic came to a complete standstill. Many people jumped from their cars and ran to Bernadine to see if they could help her.

The taxi driver had not been arrested yet because the police first have to complete their investigation into the accident, she added

Rest in peace Bernadine.

I can't quite summon words about this. It's just so fucking TYPICAL of this area, and the drivers, ESPECIALLY taxi drivers. I'm sadly not surprised, this was inevitable, but for crying out loud why does it have to be?

The last line is the one which takes all the sorrow and pain, and transforms it into a rising hate which threatens to spill overs like a volcano in full eruption.

They have arrested me, in front of my family, leaving a non licensed mom with children on the side of the road, for technicalities, yet this DOG, cold bloodedly drives over a young girl, and they cannot arrest him???

For all that is good, holy and worth fighting for, enough!!! How dare these metro PIGS behave so callously towards the family of the dead girl? How dare they gloss over it as some "accident".

I speak only for myself, yet i'm one of many ... this MUST be dealt with in a very harsh manner. Otherwise there will be further bloodshed. This is the kind of thing that will make open war on our roads possible. Since the police *spit* have no apparent regard for this as anything more than manslaughter, and NOT the murder it is, what is left but vigilanteism? What other form of justice is available for the victim's family and friends?

This WILL NOT go away. We will NOT allow this to become JUST ANOTHER FUCKING WORTHLESS DEATH. This is honour, this is dignity, this is a fight to be recognised as HUMAN. Nothing more, nothing less.
